Can you believe the new year is upon us already?! I’m sure you all are still recovering from the holidays like me (I can’t seem to get enough naps these days, lol). The start of a new year is usually a time for resolutions, refocusing, regrouping, recouping, and refreshing. So many people go through this cycle year in and year out, myself included. And year in and year out, so many of us leave a lot of unfinished plans.
Let’s shake things up a bit this year. Instead of making resolutions, let’s set goals. Let’s set a plan for attaining those goals. Let’s share those goals with supportive people. Let’s make this year rock!
I know, I know, all of this is so much easier said than done. I’m sure you are already thinking of a million things that could come up and derail your plans…
STOP RIGHT THERE!!
Don’t sabotage yourself. You can accomplish your goals this year. Go ahead and start telling yourself that now. Breathe life into those goals!
In the days and months ahead, we will get into goal-setting as well as a few other ways to help you be your greatest this year extensively. But for now, I just want to share a few things to keep in mind as we move into this new season of our lives:
1. Live Purposefully
While it is possible to go through life aimlessly, how fulfilling would that be? We all have something that we were born to do. There are things we were destined to accomplish. And let’s not forget the things that make our hearts leap for joy! How would we get those things done if we just went through the motions from day to day?
Proverbs 20:5 states that “the purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out” (ESV). Examine your heart. Evaluate the things that mean the most to you; and live to fulfill those things. Let them be your daily motivation.
2. Move Intentionally
We all have heard the saying; “it is better to measure 10 times and cut once than to measure once and cut 10 times”. Same concept applies here (see Luke 14: 28-33). Plan your major moves carefully. Consider all of your options and possible outcomes first. Trust me, this saves you a lot of headaches in the long run!
3. Never Lose Focus
It is very easy to get distracted, discouraged, and disheartened on the road to reaching your goals; and even in life in general. Having a focal point can help. Things like vision boards, quotes posted around the house, key scriptures you commit to memory, and affirmations can keep your mind grounded to your goals. Something as simple as telling yourself aloud “I can do this, I can do this” or “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” are great for starters.
Accountability partners are another great tool to use when you need help staying on track. Choose someone (or a group of people) that have the same goals in common with you. It should be someone who you feel comfortable opening up to. You have to be completely honest with your accountability partners in order for the relationship to be productive.
We are a week into the New Year. Let’s keep the excitement and momentum going! Share your goals in the comments below so we can all keep each other encouraged. Also, take a moment to speak the out loud- give your words life!!
